It’s a sight that’s bound to elicit groans, sighs and even cries of frustration: the Netflix proxy error. Netflix can then look at those accounts and see the IP addresses they’ve used in the past. If there are a bunch of different IPs from all over the place, that’s another red flag. Is it impossible for someone to watch Netflix in Chicago and then again in Germany a few hours later? Maybe not, but it’s extremely unlikely.

So Netflix assumes (often correctly) that these IP addresses are from VPNs. And then it swiftly adds them to the blacklist, cutting them off from streaming content. The next time that IP tries to visit Netflix, all it’ll receive in return is an error message.

If you’re already an ExpressVPN user, you’ve probably noticed that all the desktop apps are the same in design and functionality. However, there are slight differences in the apps; we’ll break them down:

ExpressVPN Windows app

The ExpressVPN Windows app is extremely fool-proof. When you sign in, you either have the option to directly hit the “Smart Connect” or choose your own server and tweak the settings. The entire appearance, usability, and features of the ExpressVPN Windows app feel like a walk in the park.

There are a variety of protocols to choose from (Lightway (UDP/TCP), OpenVPN (UDP/TCP), IKEv2, and P2TP/IPsec. The windows client has a network lock kill switch by default and IPv6 leak protection.

Besides that, the app offers a speed test feature, in which you test out the latency and download speed of the servers. The app operates using AES bit encryption to secure your connection.

How to install ExpressVPN on Windows

• Sign up for ExpressVPN. Head to the website, choose the best subscription plan, and create your account.
• Download and install the ExpressVPN app on your desktop.
• Launch the VPN and sign in to your account.
• Connect to any server you like, or click on the Smart Location option to give you the best option according to your location.
• Tweak the ExpressVPN settings if you’d like to change protocols.
• That’s it! Use the internet safely and freely with ExpressVPN!

ExpressVPN Mac app

The ExpressVPN Mac app is much like the Windows app. The design, the features, and its functionality. However, the only difference is that the macOS app does not have any Split-Tunneling feature that you’d find on the Windows app.

There is a Kill Switch (Network Lock) that you’ll find in the “General” settings and IPv6 leak protection in the “Advanced” settings. You can also choose the best protocols on the ExpressVPN Mac app.

There is a choice between Lightway (UDP/TCP), OpenVPN (UDP/TCP), and IKEv2. There is no P2TP/IPsec protocol availability, but that’s okay. It only works over a couple of servers and the security over it is a little low. I recommend choosing the “Automatic” protocol selection since it connects you to the best protocol according to your task.

How to install ExpressVPN on Mac

• Sign up for ExpressVPN. Head to the website, choose the best subscription plan, and create your account.
• Download the ExpressVPN Mac app from the website.
• Install the app from the .dmg package.
• Launch the VPN and sign in to your account.
• Connect to any server you like, or click on “Smart Location” to give you the best option according to your location.
• You can configure the VPN settings according to what you’d like.
• That’s it! Use the internet safely and freely with ExpressVPN!

ExpressVPN Android app

I mainly tested the ExpressVPN app to check its performance on Windows, Android, and iOS devices. Despite the great Windows app, my main concern surrounded its smartphone counterparts. The ExpressVPN Android app was readily available on the Google Play Store, and the download and installation time barely took 1 minute.

When I launched the app, I was pleased to see the design was clear-cut, simple to navigate, and even easier to use. It made a great VPN to take around on your phone while on the move. There is a “Smart Location” button, or you can click on the “&#;” next to it to launch the locations bar.

To tweak the settings, you can click on the “Options” button, in the screen’s lower-right corner. This will take you to the app’s “Settings” menu. You’ll find a Split-Tunneling feature that you can enable. There’s also a Network protection option, where you’d find the Kill Switch enabler, right under “Internet Access.”

There’s also the “Privacy & Security Tools” section, where you can conduct a DNS and WebRTC leak test. What I love about the Android app is that it offers a Password Generator that you can use when you need to create strong passcodes.

Coming back to the security front, the ExpressVPN Android app operates with AES bit encryption combined with all the best protocols. It offers Automatic selection, Lightway (UDP/TCP), and OpenVPN (UDP/TCP). There’s no option of IKEv2 or P2TP/IPsec.

How to install ExpressVPN on Android phone

• Sign up for an ExpressVPN account from the website.
• Once created, go to the Google Play Store on your Android smartphone.
• Look for the ExpressVPN Android app and click on “Install.”
• Give it a few seconds to install.
• Click on “Open” and sign in to your account.
• Click on “Smart location” or choose a server.
• That’s all! You can now access streaming services, apps, and websites on your smartphone, using the ExpressVPN Android app.

ExpressVPN iOS app

Most would assume that smartphone VPN apps are the same for all OS devices. However, iOS VPN apps usually lack perks. When I tested the ExpressVPN iOS app, I found it a little basic, even though the performance was top-notch. The security and unblocking abilities were down to a T, yes, it was perfect, and the VPN did not leak any data.

I ran tests using the US New York server since most users seek US-based streaming services. The performance overall was great, and the app was easy to get and install from the Apple App Store. However, it wasn’t as good as the Android app. It has a threat manager that the Android app doesn’t offer and has security and privacy tools to check if there are any data leaks.

However, when it comes to a Kill Switch and Split Tunneling, there isn’t any. I feel the iOS app needs to take it up a notch in these aspects. Apart from that, the ExpressVPN iOS app only had two protocols to choose from. It offers Lightway (UDP/TCP) and IKEv2. Lightway is great for online privacy, speeds, and streaming, but I wish there were OpenVPN.

How to install ExpressVPN on iOS phone

• Sign up for an ExpressVPN account from the website.
• Go to the App Store and search for the ExpressVPN app.
• Tap on “Get” and wait for the ExpressVPN iOS app to download.
• Launch the VPN and sign in to your account.
• Choose the best server.
• You can now use your iOS VPN app to securely use the internet.

ExpressVPN Browser Extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge

Other than its app support, the ExpressVPN browser extensions are pretty impressive too. It offers extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. When you’re streaming on Netflix or even BBC iPlayer, there are chances the performance is impacted by the browser you use.

Apart from the apps working great on all browsers, ExpressVPN even offers extensions that are suitable for simple website surfing and unblocking content.

ExpressVPN Extensions (Locations and security)

Some users utilize proxies to unblock websites, but a VPN extension is a far better option. Plus, it comes with encryption that proxies don’t offer. The ExpressVPN browser extensions don’t offer all the apps&#; features, but it’s just enough to get the job done. When I tested the ExpressVPN extensions on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, I could also unblock some streaming services.

What I love about the VPN extensions is that they come with WebRTC leak blocking. I tested them out on a couple of websites to ensure none of my data or IP address was leaking. I even tested it using several different servers; the results were great.

There’s also an HTTPS everywhere feature that pushes you to websites that run on HTTPS, just to make sure you’re only visiting secure sites.

Is there a downside to the ExpressVPN extensions? They’re not available for Safari, and you won’t find them accessible on your tablets or smartphones.

ExpressVPN MediaStreamer SmartDNS

Now, apart from Windows, smartphones, and TV devices, some devices don’t support VPN native apps. This relates to gaming consoles like Xbox. PS4, Xbox, or even devices like Roku, Apple TV, and other Smart TVs.

The MediaStreamer can be used over them via router support and allow you to bypass geo-restrictions. This DNS proxy acts like a VPN but isn’t the same. You can’t change locations, nor can you use it for online protection. It only acts like a gateway to unblocking some streaming services.

To begin, you must sign into your account via the ExpressVPN website and head to your dashboard settings. Next, you register your IP address and then click on “Configure DNS on this device.” This will take you to a list of MediaStreamer IP addresses. Choose an IP according to the service you’re planning on getting.

How to use MediaStreamer on a router running ExpressVPN v2

• First, start by signing into your router that is compatible with ExpressVPN.
• Next, on the app, click on the three horizontal dots on the top-right of the app.
• Click on ‘All Locations” and select “MediaStreamer.”
• You’ll now be connected to MediaStreamer for your device.

ExpressVPN Router Support

It’s very unusual that you’ll find a VPN that offers an app for routers. The support isn’t always up to the mark even if it does. However, ExpressVPN offers an extremely streamlined app for routers. You’ll find detailed guides to set up ExpressVPN on supported routers on the website.

Plus, if there are some routers that need manual configuration, ExpressVPN highlights that as well. The ExpressVPN app can be added to various router models; DD-WRT, Asus, D-Link, Tomato, Sabai, Xiaomi, and more.

Additionally, if you don’t have a router with the appropriate firmware, you can get pre-flashed routers with ExpressVPN already configured on them from the website. When I tested the router VPN app, I added some of my home devices to it, including gaming consoles.

You can use the router VPN connection and add it to your Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and others. If you’re worried about speeds slowing down, it won’t. Once you’ve got ExpressVPN configured on your router, you can also use the MediaStreamer Smart DNS over it to unblock streaming services. However, please understand that this feature doesn’t work like a VPN; there is no encryption.

How do you use the ExpressVPN app (Windows)?

ExpressVPN is pretty simple, or better yet, straightforward to use. Once you launch the VPN, you can connect to the best server by clicking on the three horizontal dots. This will launch all the ExpressVPN servers that break into “Recommended” or “All Locations.” Choose the location you want, and click on the connect button like in the image below. If not, you could simply double-click on your selected server and you’d connect automatically.

Another tip, if you’re only looking to secure your connection with the ExpressVPN app, you can just click on the Smart Location button, like in the image below. This will give you the best server location according to the country you’re physically in.

Alternatively, you can tweak the settings accordingly, depending on what you need the VPN for. To get to the settings, click on the hamburger icon on the top-right corner of the app, select the best protocol, or tweak the general settings depending on what you’d like.

Now, these settings are what you’d find on the ExpressVPN app. However, there are certain settings, like changing your MediaStreamer IP addresses, signing in with an activation code, or even fixing the DNS settings you’d find via the website. When you sign into your account, enter the activation code sent to you via the email you provided and go into your Dashboard.

This was just a bird-eye-view of how to use the VPN app once you get it.

Does ExpressVPN offer multiple device connections?

Yes, ExpressVPN is among some of the best VPNs that offer simultaneous device connections. With one VPN subscription, you get on up to 5 multiple device connections. The added bonus is that ExpressVPN supports routers, which means you can add multiple supported devices to your ExpressVPN WiFi router.

The ExpressVPN servers and speed review

ExpressVPN is known for its fast connection speeds and servers that are optimized to get past most geo-blocks. Here’s what I gathered from using the VPN:

ExpressVPN servers

If you’re still wondering where your investments in this VPN are going, let’s talk about the ExpressVPN network coverage. It gives you an extensive list of + servers in locations spread across 94 countries globally.

There are a few VPNs that are cheaper and cover even more servers than ExpressVPN, but not all of them are reliable. You could say that most UK servers failed to work when I tested other providers, but the ExpressVPN UK servers helped with BBC iPlayer and other UK TV channels without issues. Almost all the ExpressVPN servers work, which is what kept me drawn to the provider.

You’ll find coverage in Canada, the US, Germany, France, Brazil, and Italy.  ExpressVPN even touches base with servers in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, the UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan.

If you’re wondering whether ExpressVPN has an India server, it doesn’t. There were some privacy and security issues within the country, where ExpressVPN and a couple of other providers had to remove the India server to create better security. However, you can still access Indian services like Hotstar and SonyLiv. ExpressVPN has a virtual India server via Singapore and the UK.  

I was pretty impressed to find out that ExpressVPN covers locations that have heavy restrictions are internet censorship laws. To name a few, it includes servers in Belarus, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and more.

Besides this, the servers are branched into country-level and city-level servers. This makes it easier for users to choose the best one according to where they’re located. For instance, if you’re in the US and live in Dallas, you could to the US Dallas server (city-level server). It offers city-level servers in over 16 countries.

The Smart Location Feature

When you’re trying to unblock a particular streaming service, you’d know exactly what VPN server to connect with. However, it’s a little different if you’re only looking to remain anonymous within your own country.

Sometimes, you won’t find a VPN server in your location, so the next option is to choose a server closest to your physical location. For this, I found the ExpressVPN Smart Location feature extremely handy. The option is available on all apps. You only need to click on the button, giving you the best server.

The ExpressVPN Virtual Servers

Does ExpressVPN offer any virtual server locations? Yes, it does. These servers are included as a part of security. How does it work? Well, let’s say you want access to the India server. We know that ExpressVPN removed its India physical servers for security reasons.

However, to ensure users access Indian services, it offers virtual India servers routed through Singapore and the UK. This means that the IP address you’re assigned will state as India but will be physically located in the other two countries.

In short, it includes 3% of virtual servers of countries that come with the worst kind of censorship and surveillance laws. For example, it removed its India, China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia physical servers and replaced them with virtual ones.

Does ExpressVPN offer Static IP addresses?

No, ExpressVPN does not offer any static or dedicated IP addresses. You or I would need a dedicated IP address to access or run a particular website or app. However, even though a static IP is great, it’s not as secure as a shared IP.

With the ExpressVPN shared IPs, you’d be able to secure your internet and access numerous streaming services without tracks being led to you. This is one thing ExpressVPN has carefully thought about.

ExpressVPN uses TrustedServer Technology

Are the ExpressVPN servers safe? Is your data via these servers logged? Most users, including myself, have always had questions regarding how secure and private our browsing is while connected to a VPN. ExpressVPN has the answer for that.

With this new technology, ExpressVPN strives to secure and enhance your privacy, even while using its servers. Basically, ExpressVPN offers RAM-only servers. It means that the VPN won’t be able to store any data. It’s all deleted after every session or when the VPN is restarted.

In short, your data is never stored. Even if it is, it’s only for a short period and is wiped fresh when you disconnect from the VPN. The TrustedServer technology updates the software with every reboot and patches security flaws.

Yes, ExpressVPN does work in China and quite consistently.

China is by far the most heavily guarded country in the world. So saying that its internet privileges are censored and limited is an understatement. It goes out of the way and actively bans the use of VPNs from accessing websites/content within China.

However, ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN services for China, which helps unblock multiple restricted or censored content like YouTube and Whatsapp! ExpressVPN Stealth Servers (Obfuscated)

Usually, when using a VPN in a country with high censorship, you’d need to add extra measures to make sure your traffic can’t be seen or to allow you to access geo-restricted streaming services. However, with ExpressVPN, I found it to be just the opposite. The VPN offers servers that are all under Stealth or Obfuscated mode. This makes you using a VPN hard to detect.

I even asked the ExpressVPN support chat to reconfirm. Here’s what they had to say:

ExpressVPN Speed Test

Connection, loading, upload, and download speeds are super important for streaming, torrenting, gaming, and everything. It’s a VPN myth when users or advertisers say a VPN can increase your speed.

They should mean that a VPN helps stabilize speeds, depending on your internet package. Plus, there are times when you pay for fast connections but experience something called ISP throttling.

Even though using a VPN slows down speeds slightly, it should not go lower than the expected rate. It’s why I believe ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPNs around.

I didn’t experience any lagging, website response rates took faster to load, and I managed to download apps without waiting ages. That’s something I was personally looking for. I tested ExpressVPN with PUBG on my Android, and I can easily say it lowered ping. I can label it as the best VPN for it.

Testing the Speeds

I test the ExpressVPN speeds multiple times to check if there are any changes in the VPN. I connected to both long-distance and short-distance servers. But before seeing the results, here’s what my speeds were without the VPN;

I’m from Asia, so for the short-distance server speeds, I connected to the options closest to me.

I broke up the short and long-distance servers just to check if both gave proper results. This is because both results were a little dim when I used other VPNs in the past. Let’s first start with the server that comes most recommended for short-distance connections:

The speeds on the short-distance servers were exceptionally good, considering that most VPNs don’t offer the same results even if they’re affordable. However, I have to admit the Hong Kong server took a little longer to load, but on the second try, the results exceeded my expectations.

Now, here comes the part of the speed tests that really make or break the results. The long-distance speeds are the most difficult to maintain. So, I’ll first start with the most sought-after server:

The long-distance server speeds were some of the best I’ve ever gotten. I’ve tested over 50 VPNs, but the speeds never matched ExpressVPN. So, if you’re wondering, how fast is ExpressVPN? IT’S FAST! However, I was a little disappointed in the South African server but still managed to successfully use it for streaming. 

Now that we’re done with the server speed tests, let’s test the US server using different protocols. This will show us the best protocol for speeds.

Can ExpressVPN be trusted?

Yes, ExpressVPN is one of the safest and most trustworthy providers. To use it to stream geo-restricted streaming services, torrent, or even use it in countries where surveillance is high, ExpressVPN needs to be trustworthy. I’ll break up everything there is to know on the safety of the VPN.

No-logs policy

It’s extremely common for a VPN provider to claim that they follow a no-logging policy and then render the opposite results. As in the case of ExpressVPN, their privacy policies seem to be exempt from any false calamities.

If you head over to their webpage and click on the option “What is VPN”, you’ll find an option that says “Privacy Safeguards”, where you’ll understand every piece of data that ExpressVPN logs and doesn’t log. In short, they deliver a clear message that your privacy is your right and that you deserve unrestricted internet freedom.

However, just like every other VPN provider, ExpressVPN does collect some information, but of a minimal kind. Here’s what they collect as per their privacy policy:

• They collect all the apps that are connected with the VPN
• The date you connected to the VPN
• Which server location you used
• The amount of data you used in a day
• Your Email information, mainly to send daily alerts, etc.

All-in-all, the information that ExpressVPN collects is void of any important information. All the data they collect will not in any way harm your privacy. They mainly collect this information for technical support issues and to guide you through a solution to these problems.

Additionally, ExpressVPN is located in the British Virgin Islands, far away from the eyes alliance. This means that you’re out of hot waters, where having a safe VPN matter.

Other than what ExpressVPN does not log, the VPN is also safe because it doesn’t leak data. We tested the VPN to see how it performed. For the leak tests, I connected to various ExpressVPN servers. Here are the results:

ExpressVPN Security Features

Now, coming to one of the main parts of this ExpressVPN review, is its security and privacy features. To hide your traffic and secure your connection, the VPN must be strong. Here’s what ExpressVPN offers for your online privacy and security:

Encryption

Encryption according to me, is far more important than other VPN features. A VPNs encryption protects and secures your data from leaking out. With it, your privacy remains intact. The most unbreakable kind of encryption is bit AES.

Luckily, ExpressVPN operates on an AES bit cipher with a bit RSA key and SHA HMAC authentication. ExpressVPN also utilizes Perfect Forward Secrecy. This means you’ll be allotted a new encryption key every time you connect to the VPN, making it twice as difficult for anyone to infiltrate your data or session.

Its protocols

One of the main protocols that every VPN should possess is the OpenVPN protocol.

ExpressVPN supports not only the OpenVPN (UDP/TCP) protocols on all its Express servers but also supports IPSec, L2TP, IKEv2, and PPTP. You’ll find it on the Android, Windows, iOS, macOS, and Linux clients.

Split-tunneling 

If you need to use ExpressVPN with a particular app or website, you could enable the VPN’s Split-Tunneling option. You can pass traffic to that app or website via the VPN, while the rest passes without it.

What’s new? The ExpressVPN Lightway protocol

After a few upgrades to its app, ExpressVPN now offers a new Lightway protocol. It works faster and adds much more security and stability online. It works way better on mobile apps compared to desktops.

Kill Switch

Okay, so when choosing a VPN, always ask the support chat whether they have a Kill Switch on the VPN or not. If you’re still a little unsure about it, test it out using a free trial or refund period.

A Kill Switch is another important feature besides encryption that protects your privacy and data even after the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.

ExpressVPN does come with an active Kill Switch by the name Network Lock. You’ll find this option already present by default in most clients.

Sadly, ExpressVPN doesn’t have a Kill Switch for iOS devices, which many top VPN providers fail to add. I even double-checked with the support team. However, the iOS app does have an auto-reconnect option available. This is just in case you’ve lost your VPN or internet connection halfway.

Advanced features

Besides a functional Kill Switch, ExpressVPN includes other advanced security features in its app. These include:

• IPv6 leak protection – It will ensure that all your online activities stay private and anonymous. With the IPv6 feature enabled, your IP, location, and identity are all intact and secured, no matter what device. However, there were some claims by users concerning the IPv6 leak protection feature not being functional.
• DNS protection – ExpressVPN runs its encrypted DNS servers. This will give you double the protection, ensuring you are IP and DNS leak-free.
• MediaStreamer – apart from including DNS-protected servers, ExpressVPN has an advanced feature named MediaStreamer. This allows you to bypass or connect with any or multiple restricted streaming services worldwide. Other than this, there are certain devices like a first-generation Firestick/FireTV, Roku, or Chromecast that most VPNs, including ExpressVPN that don’t have dedicated apps for. However, the great thing about the ExpressVPN MediaStreamer is that it can unblock multiple blocked streaming services. To get started with these devices, all you need to do is replace the default DNS servers of your device through your Wi-Fi.
• TOR adds an extra layer of anonymity and protection; ExpressVPN is compatible with TOR. This will probably give you all the freedom you need to browse the internet with unrestricted freedom, even if it’s on the dark web.

Servers and performance

DNS calls are unencrypted, so if a VPN lets your computer carry on using the default DNS service nominated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), then all of the websites that you visit could be logged by your ISP, hackers, or government spooks tapping the line. Fortunately, both ExpressVPN and NordVPN force all DNS references to travel down their encrypted tunnels, preventing any outsiders from seeing your activity on the web.

Both apps include a kill switch option. This prevents you from accidentally browsing with the VPN disconnected. NordVPN allows you to either use a regular kill switch or one that only affects specific apps. ExpressVPN doesn&#;t have that per-app option, but it does offer split tunneling across all of its apps. This allows you to nominate apps to bypass the VPN and keep all others protected.

Additionally, You can instruct both apps to start when the operating system boots up, which means that you can set them to run on your computer all of the time. Both companies also scramble the encrypted content of packets to prevent any repeated data creating patterns in the encrypted transmission.

Privacy

Most VPNs say they don&#;t keep any logs. However, when you dig a little deeper, what they often mean is that they don&#;t keep any activity logs. An activity log would record every action performed by the user, including websites visited and data downloads. Unfortunately, by tracing a connection from its destination back through to its originator, prosecutors and law enforcement agencies can track you to your door. A VPN makes this more difficult, but if your provider hands over detailed connection logs, it really hasn&#;t provided you any protection at all.

ExpressVPN stores some aggregated connection logs, but goes out of its way to avoid storing any data that could identify you. Its logs include your account ID, the date (not time) of connections, the location connected to and from, and the total amount of data transferred.
