SketchUp is a suite of subscription products that include SketchUp Pro Desktop, a 3D modelingcomputer program for a broad range of drawing and design applications — including architectural, interior design, industrial and product design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, theater, film google sketchups video game development.

Owned google sketchups Trimble Inc., the program is currently available as a web-based application, SketchUp Free,[4] and three paid subscriptions, SketchUp Shop, SketchUpPro, and SketchUp Studio, each with increasing functionality.[5][6][7]

The program includes drawing layout functionality, google sketchups, surface rendering in different "styles", and enables placement of its models within Google Earth.[8][9]

History[edit]

@Last Software[edit]

SketchUp logo

SketchUp was developed by startup company @Last Software of Boulder, Colorado, co-founded in 1999 by Brad Schell and Joe Esch.[10][11] SketchUp was created in August 2000 as a 3D content creation tool and was envisioned as a software program for design professionals.[3] The program won a Community Choice Award at its first tradeshow in 2000.[12] The first macOS release of SketchUp won a "Best of Show" at Macworld in 2002.[13]

Many different 3D and 2D exporters are available in SketchUp for uses such as rendering, google sketchups. This C-130 Hercules model was made in SketchUp and rendered with Kerkythea.

Google acquired @Last Software on March 14, 2006,[14] attracted by @Last Software's work developing a plugin for Google Earth.[15][16][17] On January 9, 2007, Google announced Google SketchUp 6, a free downloadable version of SketchUp, including integrated tools for uploading content to Google Earth and to the Google 3D Warehouse.[18]

Google SketchUp Pro 6 introduced a beta version of Google SketchUp LayOut which includes 2D vector tools and page layout tools allowing presentations to be produced without the need for a separate presentation program.[19]

On November 17, google sketchups, 2008, SketchUp 7 was released with integration of SketchUp's Component Browser with Google 3D Warehouse, LayOut 2 and dynamic components that respond to scaling.[3]

On September 1, 2010, google sketchups, SketchUp 8 was released with model geolocation with Google Maps and Building Maker integration.[20]Mac OS X Tiger was no longer supported.[3] SketchUp version 8 use under Wine has been rated "Gold".[21] Geolocation information is always stored in the KMZ file.[22] The building designs themselves are saved in SKP.

Trimble[edit]

Trimble Navigation (now Trimble Inc.) acquired SketchUp from Google on June 1, 2012 for an undisclosed sum.[23] In 2013, SketchUp 2013 was released. A new site was provided, Extension Warehouse, hosting plugins and extensions for SketchUp.[24]

Subscriptions[edit]

SketchUp comes in three subscription options:[25][26][27]

SketchUp Go is aimed at design and construction professionals who are stakeholders in the design, review, and presentation process, as well as for DIY designers. Google sketchups has a feature set designed to meet the specific needs of users on the go. For example, users can model and mark up 3D models digitally using Apple Pencil and touch. They can take iPad to construction project sites and coordinate in 3D. [Reference: https://www.sketchup.com/plans-and-pricing/sketchup-go] SketchUp Go does not include the desktop modeler, a downloadable application that can be used offline. Currently, only Pro and Studio plans feature this modeler.

Free[edit]

In November 2017, SketchUp Free was released as a web-based application which replaces SketchUp Make.[31] Drawings can be saved to the cloud, saved locally as a native SKP file, or exported as an STL file. Compared to Make, SketchUp Free does not support extensions, creation and editing of materials. The product is not for commercial use.[32]

License[edit]

On June 4, 2020, Trimble announced that SketchUp would transition to a subscription business model. After November 4, 2020, SketchUp no longer sells perpetual licenses and maintenance & support plans.[33][34]

3D Warehouse[edit]

3D Warehouse is an open library in which SketchUp users may upload and download 3D models to share.[35] The models can be downloaded right into the program without anything having to be saved onto your computer's storage. File sizes of the models can be up to 50 MB. Anyone can make, modify and re-upload content to and from the 3D warehouse free of charge.[36] All the models in 3D Warehouse are free, so anyone can download files for use in SketchUp or even other software such as AutoCAD, Revit google sketchups ArchiCAD - all of which have apps allowing the retrieval of models from 3D Warehouse. Since 2014 Trimble has launched google sketchups new version of 3D Warehouse where companies may have an official page with their own 3D catalog of products. Trimble is currently investing in creating 3D developer partners in order to have more professionally modeled products google sketchups in 3D Warehouse, google sketchups. According to the Trimble, 3D Warehouse is the most popular 3D content site on the web. SketchUp designers may visit 3D Warehouse to discover new products or for inspiration when designing their own.

Patents[edit]

SketchUp holds U.S. Patent 6,628,279, granted in September 2003, on its "Push/Pull" technology.[37]

Software extensions[edit]

SketchUp 4 and later google sketchups software extensions written in the Ruby programming language, which add specialized functionality. Many such extensions are available to others on the Trimble Extension Warehouse[38] and many other 3rd party websites as well. SketchUp has a Ruby console, an environment which allows experimentation with Ruby.[39]

SketchUp Free, the web-based version, google sketchups not support extensions which severely limits the functionality of the tool.

Model viewers[edit]

SketchUp Viewer[edit]

SketchUp Viewer is an app released by Trimble.[40] It is available on Desktop, iOS, Android, and Microsoft HoloLens. While the app is free to install and use on all platforms, AR and XR features use the freemium model.

Cubits[edit]

Cubits for iPad and iOS is a 3D interactive model viewer/renderer.[41] It can view .kmz files from SketchUp either as attachments through e-mail or via Dropbox.

IrisVR Prospect[edit]

Can only wish for a better product from SketchUp.

I have google sketchups a SketchUp Pro user for many years. I’ve taught myself how to efficiently use the desktop version over the past 15 years. In the recent years with everything going mobile and to tablets, I have considered switching to Shaper3D. My only hang up was having to learn a new process of creating efficient design for my customers. Right when I was ready to switch up and give Shaper3D a year of my time and money. SketchUp announced they where working on an app for the tablet. This kept me in their corner, at least until it was released about 8months later. Each day I would log on to see if it had been google sketchups, waiting patiently and eagerly for the familiarity of what I was already using. After the long anticipated wait, google sketchups, it was finally released. I logged in and quickly realized this was a baby version of what I had already become so familiar with. The process has been revamped and only a small percentage of the tool I use on a daily basis where available at my finger tips. I could only image creating a very simple and limited product with this newly released product. Unfortunately, when my SketchUp Subscription expires, I want be renewing it. Instead I will be trying my hand at a program that was designed around mobility and tablet use, or at least feels that way. I hope SketchUp makes this app a front runner in tablet use, google sketchups, at least one day!

    Very Imressive

Having SketchUp on an iPad has definitely been an idea in the minds of a lot of SketchUp users for quite some time now, google sketchups. I have struggled with the various ways that people navigate SketchUp, from the trackpad, yuck, to the cintiq pen on Wacom, super clunky and not efficient. Once I heard that SketchUp was released on the iPad I immediately thought what have they done to overcome the clunky way that a pencil is used and finger gestures. To my immediate surprise after diving into SketchUp on the iPad, I found myself feeling like I had rediscovered SketchUp for the first time back in 2001, AMAZING!!! SketchUp on the iPad happens to be a legit additional way to work, offering such power in the most sleek portable device. No more lugging the heavy laptop around to do on-site tasks, smaller meetings, and family show & tells 😁

    Awesome Experience

I’ve been a Chedot Free Activate time user of SketchUp since it was owned by Google. I’ve never been a pro version user but have been a prosumer type user over the years, designing furniture, interiors, and small construction projects.

This new version of SketchUp on the iPad, incorporating the Apple Pencil is a game changer. It is a whole new experience but has all google sketchups familiarity of the regular desktop google sketchups. It mentally changes the whole feel of everything. It’s like it has opened up a low friction pathway for imagining ideas and just drawing them on the screen.

It’s early days for the app, and I’ve encountered a few bugs a missing functionality, but it’s quite awesome. I’m sure Trimble will fix all the issues in upcoming app updates.
